Big News About 2019!

December 7, 2018 thecraftsessions
Me! Teaching hand quilting a few years back at a special Craft Sessions event.

Me! Teaching hand quilting a few years back at a special Craft Sessions event.

Dear Crafters!

Without further ado, I'm blogging to let you know that The Craft Sessions' events will be on hiatus for 2019. This means no annual Craft Sessions retreat, and no Soul Craft in 2019.

For some of you this will come as a big surprise, but others of you will have felt it coming.

The Craft Sessions started as a total passion project – I simply wanted to bring people together who crafted for joy, and foster a love of hand making! And it worked. So many wonderful women have got to know one another through the incredible events we have run over the last six years. And I have been so grateful to be able to be there, and bear witness to the magic that happens when you bring people together around their shared passion.

You see the thing is that The Craft Sessions and Soul Craft have never been about building a business for me. I believe that connection is the secret sauce of life, and that hand making elevates our lives by giving us buoyancy. Sharing those beliefs at the events I've run has been so joyful and inspiring - but events also take a load of work and intention. I would never want to put on an event where I was just going through the motions. I think you can feel when an event has been put together with intention and care and love.

Some of you know I’ve been working on writing a book on how making impacts our wellbeing and elevates our lives – it’s my next passion project! (Or you could say it’s simply a continuation of this one.) Through running the events and talking with so many of you, both in person and online, I’ve realized the things I’ve been writing about, the ideas we have been in conversation about, don’t yet have broad understanding and acceptance in the wider world.

And so I’m on a mission – to promote hand making as a process that can elevate our lives by improving our wellbeing. And that means I have to finish the book I have been trying to write for the last few years. I believe that a hand making practice could be incredibly supporting and elevating to so many people, if only they knew why and how they could use it. These ideas deserve a much broader audience. These ideas could be of service to so many people.

The ideas contained in the book are too important to do a shitty job. A half-assed book isn’t going to cut it. And once written, I need to launch it, promote it and talk about it. I need to spread these ideas as widely and as loudly as I can.

The problem has been that when I run events I have a really easy opt-out for how I can spend my energy. For example, I worked on Soul Craft for nearly six months full time alongside the lovely Claire. Everything else in my life took a back seat, including blogging…. and I got to avoid the harder heart-work of writing the book by “having” to work on the festival. Realising that the festival was an incredibly joyful avoidance tactic on my part was a little painful, especially because it was so magical to be there, witness it, be part of it. Soul Craft was a total joy and all I'd hoped it would be.

This is why I need to take a year – I need to take a year to focus on getting my next passion project off the ground. This work deserves my full attention.

I promise there will be more events - more Soul Craft and Craft Sessions goodness! Just not any major ones in 2019.

I'm sincerely sorry to those of you who were excited about coming next year. I hate disappointing you!

The best way to keep up to date with all I’m doing is to join the mailing list. I am going to shift to a semi-monthly newsletter during this outwardly quieter period. And I’ll be back blogging every Friday - like in the old days :). There are already quite a few new posts up there from the last month or three, like Stash Less - For The Love Of Opportunity Cost , Making Shit Up, and Intentional Craft As True Comfort.

Please comment and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this, and I want to wholeheartedly thank you for your ongoing and passionate support.

Love

Our Craft Sessions Annual Retreat For 2018!

April 11, 2018 thecraftsessions
FeliciaSemple (6 of 2).jpg

Well, there has been a lot of Soul Craft talk around these parts, hasn't there? It's pretty exciting, and pretty big, and so we have been focused on getting it done. 8 weeks to go lovely people!

However, in the back ground we have been quietly, diligently, and excitedly working on this year's annual retreat. Big changes are afoot in that this year - based on popular demand! - we have extended the retreat to a full three days. A retreat where we can truly retreat for three days in the beautiful surrounds of the Yarra Valley with friends old and new, engaging in craft. More days = more joy!

All the details are up on the brand new 2018 Retreat Page but the important bits are;

  1. - The retreat runs 5pm Thursday September 6th to 4.30pm Sunday September 9th 2018.
  2. - Workshops will be listed April 29th, with tickets going on sale May 6th at 5pm!

We will have a pile of new classes and some new teachers as well as old favourites - just as we do every year - we always try to mix it up a bit, and I'm thrilled with the balance we have struck this year.

Excitingly this year we will have Mary Jane Mucklestone joining us from the US to teach colourwork. I got to meet her last year, and just know you will love her. Her depth of knowledge and the generosity of her spirit are wonderful. I learnt so much that was totally unexpected in her class.

So stay tuned - April 29th we will go live with this year's workshops!

If you want to be kept up to date about all things The Craft Sessions then please join our mailing list here OR if you are more interested in Soul Craft then please join our mailing list at the bottom of the Soul Craft page.

And please have a look at the retreat page. All the details are there.

Some Of the photos from our Annual 2017 Retreat

September 22, 2017 thecraftsessions
FeliciaSemple (105 of 509).jpg

I love these photos! They have been the perfect reminder of all the good that was our annual retreat last week in the beautiful Yarra Valley, and of all the joy that is this magical craft community! As I sit here tonight perusing these beautiful images*, I am struck yet again by how generous and beautiful our community is, and what a joy it is to be a part of it.

The joy is that every time we run the retreat, we get to hang in the company of a group of wonderful women who come with open and generous hearts, ready to welcome those who they have not yet met into the space. Ready to listen to one another's stories and share their own. Women who enter into their learning and their making, with such bravery and grace. Who encourage one another and delight in one another's creations. And who understand what it is to live a life that has making as a core source of joy and sustenance.

As I look through these images, all I can think is thank you all for what you bring, both to the retreat and online to this blog. Getting to hear your stories and see a small part of your hearts, fills me up.

Enjoy!

The Weekend That Just Was :) x

September 12, 2017 thecraftsessions
FeliciaSemple (1 of 1).jpg

What a sensational weekend. It was without a doubt our best yet! So full of joy and laughter (and the odd tear!) and community and connection. And so much fun.

As always the retreat was filled with the best kind of humans, interested and open and excited to be there. All weekend there were interesting conversations to be had, and beautiful making going on in every corner. And the odd glass of wine. And fires and electric blankets.

I have a couple of photos for you today. Only a couple because I am totally cream crackered, but I will be back later on in the week with a full report and all the pretty.

If you entered our The Craft Sessions At Home giveaway and your name is Ruth, Olwyn, Kari or Sian then please check back on your comment and send me an email with your address if you were one of the winners. I spent a happy hour or so tonight reading through all the comments. So many beautiful stories.

See you Friday.

Slow Stitching in the Barn

May 12, 2017 thecraftsessions

Slow Stiching In The Barn, a special event that we held at the end of March, was an amazingly beautiful weekend! Just as we had hoped it was a weekend full of amazing food, in a stunning location with so much sharing of knowledge, and generosity of spirit. And so much beautiful stitching.

The amount of stitching done by many meant that, for some of us, the weekend was anything but slow :). Luckily the environment was such that it meant that the weekend felt like a step away from the normal busy, with time to connect with those around us about our shared love of making with our hands.

The pictures will show you what it was much better than my words can, so without further ado, I present to you a few of the beautiful photos from our retreat Slow Stitching in the Barn.

Felicia xx
